Smart Home Based on the Fibaro System with Amazon Alexa Integration
A modern smart home installation radically increases comfort, security, and energy efficiency. The following description presents a complete system architecture based on reliable Fibaro components, integrated with the Amazon Alexa ecosystem for voice control.
Key System Components
The heart of the installation is a Fibaro gateway (e.g., Home Center 3), which manages all connected devices on the Z-Wave network.
1. Water Security 💧
- Flood Sensors (Fibaro Flood Sensor): Placed in key areas prone to leaks, such as the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. They instantly detect the presence of water on the floor, triggering immediate alerts.
- Solenoid Valves on the Main Water Inlet: Integrated with the flood sensors. If a leak is detected by any sensor, the system automatically sends a command to close the main water valve, minimizing the risk of serious damage.
2. Comfort and Climate Control 🌡️
- Humidity and Temperature Sensors: Built into many Fibaro devices (like motion or flood sensors), they monitor room conditions. This data can be used to automatically control ventilation or humidifiers.
- Radiator Thermostats (Fibaro Heat Controller): Installed on radiators, they allow for precise temperature control in each room individually. They enable the creation of heating schedules adapted to the residents' lifestyle, which generates significant savings.
3. Smart Lighting 💡
- Light Switches (Fibaro Walli Switch / Dimmer): Mounted in wall boxes, they replace traditional switches. They allow for remote on/off and dimming control via an app, schedules, or voice commands.
4. Energy Management ⚡
- Electricity Meter: A 3-phase meter mounted on a DIN rail in the main electrical distribution board. Its purpose is to monitor the total energy consumption of the household for informational and analytical purposes, allowing for conscious energy management.
5. Navigational LED Lighting 🚶
- Skirting Board Lighting (LED Strips): Discreetly mounted in skirting boards along the hallway. They are connected to Fibaro controllers (e.g., RGBW Controller).
- Motion Sensors (Fibaro Motion Sensor): Linked to the skirting board lighting in the hallway. Their task is to activate the lighting 24/7 upon detecting motion, providing convenience and automating lighting in common areas.
6. Air Conditioning Control ❄️
- Air Conditioning Integration: Using dedicated modules (e.g., Z-Wave to IR bridges), the Fibaro system integrates with air conditioning units. This allows the AC to be included in scenes, schedules, and enables remote control of its temperature and operating mode.
Hardware Used
Below is a list of the key devices used in this installation:
Gateway
- Fibaro Home Center 3
Sensors
- Flood: Fibaro Flood Sensor (FGFS-101)
- Flood: Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro
- Temperature & Humidity: Aeotec AerQ Temperature and Humidity Sensor
- Motion: Fibaro Motion Sensor (FGMS-001)
Switches & Plugs

Heating
- Thermostatic Head: Fibaro Heat Controller (FGT-001)
Amazon Alexa Integration
Integration with Amazon Alexa allows for voice control of the lighting and air conditioning. Please note that the assistant does not support Polish, so commands must be issued in English.
Example Voice Commands (in English)
- Lighting Control (On/Off):
- "Alexa, turn on the living room light."
- "Alexa, turn off the kitchen light."
- Air Conditioning Control (On/Off):
- "Alexa, turn on air conditioning."
- "Alexa, turn off air conditioning."
Example Automation Scenarios
The power of a smart home lies in scenes and automations that operate without user intervention.
-
Automatic Water Shut-off:
- A Fibaro Flood Sensor detects water.
- The gateway immediately sends a push notification to the owner's phone.
- Simultaneously, a signal is sent to the solenoid valve, which closes the main water supply.
-
Smart Heating:
- The Fibaro system retrieves weather forecast data for the home's location.
- On a sunny day, thermostats in sun-exposed rooms can preemptively lower the heating to avoid overheating and save energy.
- Before an expected cold spell, the system can gently raise the temperature to ensure constant comfort.
-
Automatic Hallway Lighting:
- A motion sensor in the hallway detects movement.
- The gateway activates the skirting board LED lighting.
- After a specified period of no motion (e.g., 2 minutes), the light is automatically turned off.
-
Automatic TV Wall Lighting:
- The Fibaro Wall Plug connected to the television detects an increase in power consumption.
- The system verifies that the current time is after sunset.
- If both conditions are met, the gateway automatically activates the LED backlighting behind the TV.
- When the TV is turned off, the Wall Plug detects the load drop, and the system automatically turns off the TV wall lighting.
Summary
An installation based on Fibaro components provides a solid and scalable foundation for any smart home. It ensures security (flood protection), convenience (remote and automatic control), and savings (optimization of heating and energy consumption). Adding voice control with Amazon Alexa makes daily interactions with the home simple and natural.
